Critical reading of modernism as a high art tradition. Emphasis on context: culture of capitalism, shift in power from Europe to the U.S., role of gender and race, and the aesthetic as either apolitical refuge or site of disruption and critique. Third in a sequence of three courses on French art and its historical context; How are museums organized, categorized, visited? How are objects physically handled, documented, and displayed? Going beyond the practical, course interrogates the concepts that practice is based on and the impact these concepts have on society and culture in the United States. Prerequisite(s): course 40 or by permission of instructor. Enrollment restricted to History of Art and Visual Culture majors and minors.
