Catherine Ries receives Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) on behalf of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to study Indonesian

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a highly competitive and prestigious intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

This Summer, Ries will be spending eight weeks in Malang Indonesia at the Universitas Malang Negeri continuing to build her Indonesian language skills. Acquiring advanced language skills in Indonesian is necessary to facilitate Ries’s research and field work on Islamic art and material culture in Indonesia.  

The Critical Language Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and administered by American Councils for International Education.
