Gaby Greenlee is awarded the Betty J. Meggers Grant for research in Peru during Summer 2017

17th century folio, colonial archives, Cusco (Archivo Regional del Cusco)
November 29, 2017

The Betty J. Meggers Grant (Americas Research Network) enabled Gaby to travel to Cusco, Peru, during Summer 2017 and dive into two key colonial archives there. While in Cusco, she was also able to take intensive Quechua language classes, which contributed to her general appreciation of the local culture and also benefited her research into colonial-period cultural shifts. The grant also allowed Gaby to take weaving classes, which was a great experience and directly related to her text-based research on the value of indigenous textiles. The fellowship provided Gaby with a firm base for further research in archives (in Peru and elsewhere) as she develops her dissertation on indigenous Andean women's garments and their meanings and uses during the early colonial period.
