Artist in Conversation: Mickalene Thomas and Derek Conrad Murray

May 8, 2015

Known for her bejeweled, sumptuous paintings and stylized photographs of women, Portraits and Other Likenesses exhibiting artist Mickalene Thomas joins Derek Conrad Murray, assistant professor, History of Art and Visual Culture, UC Santa Cruz, for a lively discussion inside her special commission for the show, Between Ourselves Again (2015). A 1970s-styled living room occupies the MoAD Salon space, including Thomas's Sista Lady Blue (2007, in SFMOMA's collection) and Lovely Six Foota (2007). These images twin two additional photographs lent by the artist: Remember Me and Afro Goddess Ex Lover's Friend (both 2006). Between Ourselves Again creates an immersive environment of figures exchanging knowing looks and certain glances, while the viewer engages the many histories and memories these muses evoke.
