This event will feature a dialogue about different understandings of race and freedom between panelists Tyler Stovall (UC Santa Cruz humanities dean) and Jennifer González (History of Art and Visual Culture professor).

“Freedom has always been a core aspect of America's national identity and, yet, from the very beginning of the country's history, members of different groups have had more or less freedom depending on their race, gender, or class. How do we grapple with this contradiction?”- Nathaniel Deutsch, History professor and Humanities Institute director

Doors open at 6 p.m. for Wine & Hors d' oeuvres. The program begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, including one complimentary drink. For more information, call (831) 459-5655 or email thi@ucsc.edu.

Freedom & Race will be the fourth installment of the Questions That Matter series presented by The Humanities Institute at UC Santa Cruz.
