This spring I had the opportunity to head the “Emergency Heritage Documentation Kits in Conflict Areas Project.” The project was funded by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training. They consist of photogrametric hardware and software for the rapid documentation of at-risk heritage in Syria, Iraq, Turkey and Northern Africa. Through this project we had the opportunity to partner with UNESCO and ICOMOS to conduct several documentation trainings and work with heritage professionals in Lebanon, Israel, and Iraq. The goal of the project is to document sites in at-risk regions that are still accessible and safe as a preventive measure lest they, be targeted for destruction. The data generated has been instrumental in general risk preparedness for the sites as well as in recovery once the much anticipated peace returns to the region. The data can also provide detailed documentation of the sites and objects which can aide in countering illicit antiquities trafficking.
