crystal am nelson presented the paper, “We Ain’t Gotta Be This: Queering Sites of Blackness,” on the Colour Me Queer panel at the annual AAH conference at the Royal College of Art in London. The panel’s aim was to develop a shared vocabulary and methodology around art and visual culture that speaks to transnational, diasporic, indigenous and decolonial bodies alongside their gendered and sexualized realities. nelson’s paper examines the growing body of material that has emerged out of the African and African Diasporic communities that propose potential reimaginings of black gender identity and sexual politics for the twenty-first century. Her presentation focused specifically on the work of Zanele Muholi and the genderqueer performance artist, Mykki Blanco.
