Undergraduate Mentors

HAVC mentors are available to share their valuable knowledge and experience with other HAVC students, to help them feel connected to the department and their peers. They can offer guidance on courses, faculty, areas of study, and ways to get involved. Mentors also serve as members of the Chair’s Student Advisory Board, and in this capacity have the opportunity to share their perspective and feedback with the department chair at quarterly meetings.

HAVC student representatives are also mentors, but go beyond that role by serving as an important channel of communication between the department and the HAVC student community. Student representatives manage our social media, facilitate student outreach, and help to develop and plan events.

Kai Ando

Kai (he/him/his) is a fourth-year double major in HAVC and Environmental Studies (Geographic Information Systems concentration). Originally from a small town in the Bay Area called Foster City, he moved south to Santa Cruz to study the environment in arguably the best campus to do so. He subsequently became a HAVC major after taking several amazing classes by the HAVC faculty (shoutout to Dr. Narath). His particular interests within HAVC include architecture/the built environment, the response by artists that address climate change/injustices, Chicana/o art, land art, and anything that intersects the arts and the environment! If any of those topics also pique your interest, please feel free to chat with Kai through email. He is more than happy to talk about anything HAVC-related or any questions/concerns about college life in general.
