Faculty Advisors

In addition to the support you receive from your undergraduate advisor, all HAVC students (majors and minors) select a faculty advisor within one quarter of declaring.

What is the purpose of a faculty advisor?

Your faculty advisor is an expert in the field you’ve chosen to study, and is the best person to talk to about your interests in art history and visual culture, what you’d like to learn more about as an undergraduate, and to explore your career goals and potential interest in graduate studies. They can offer guidance to help you reach your goals.

Additionally, the department offers scholarship and grant opportunities and if you wish to apply you will need endorsement from your faculty advisor. If you choose to complete an internship for academic credit that will require a faculty sponsor.

Another primary benefit of meeting with your faculty advisor (and other professors as well!) is relationship building. Many students will need letters of recommendation to pursue graduate studies, internship opportunities, and more, and it’s helpful to develop relationships with your teachers and mentors outside of class so they can write the best letter possible, and so you will feel more comfortable asking.

Faculty advisor selection process

Consider the faculty profiles on our website (click on professors’ names for more details) to learn more about HAVC professors’ research interests, and choose someone whose interests align with your own. It can be someone whose class you enjoyed, but you don’t have to have taken a class with them yet.

Meet with the professor you select during office hours, let them know you recently declared HAVC, and ask them to be your faculty advisor. The conversation can be casual and brief, but it is helpful to be prepared to share why you decided to ask them in particular, and why you chose to study HAVC. This can be a great launching off point! All HAVC professors are kind and welcoming and will be happy to meet with you during office hours.

Faculty office hours are posted on the contact page of our website and available within the first couple weeks of each quarter.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your undergraduate advisor for support at havc@ucsc.edu.
