Ph.D. Candidate Lorraine Affourtit published her article Embodying Decolonial Democracy: the Teachers' Movement and the People's Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, Mexico in the Journal of Labor and Society. The article, part of a special issue on Mexican Labor Unions, examines the visual politics of an alternative indigenous folk festival created in the context of the Oaxaca Commune in 2006. The article analyzes the festival as a union strategy for the Democratic Teachers' Movement, both in the context of its collaboration with the 2006 social movement, as part of a struggle for participatory democratic practices based in indigenous communal lifeways, and in its present day iteration, supporting the union's fight against neoliberal education reforms.
