The Art's Division's Film and Digital Media Department and the Center for Cultural Studies at UC Santa Cruz present a screening of two films with L.A. Rebellion filmmaker Barbara McCullough as part of the Visual and Media Cultures Colloquia (VMCC) series.
McCullough will introduce her films at the screening, and will join in a discussion about the films the following day with Lior Shamriz, graduate student in the Film and Digital Media Ph.D. Program at UC Santa Cruz. Learn more about the conversation with the filmmaker on Wed, May 25 here.

ABOUT THE FILMS
Horace Tapscott: Musical Griot (2017)
The film documents the life of piano genius, community activist, and mentor to three generations of young jazz musicians-the late Horace Tapscott.
Water Ritual #1: An Urban Rite of Purification (1979)
This seminal film was made in collaboration with performer Yolanda Vidato, Water Ritual #1 examines Black women’s ongoing struggle for spiritual and psychological space through improvisational, symbolic acts. Shot in 16mm black-and-white, the film was made in an area in Watts that had been cleared to make way for the I-105 freeway, but ultimately abandoned.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
A native of New Orleans, Barbara McCullough has lived most of her life in Southern California. Her initial interest was in photography, but the moving image, immediacy, and possible forum for ideas set her on a path of exploration. McCullough’s work progressed to examining the creative process of artists but always maintaining a fascination with experimental film and video. McCullough sees herself as a part of the continuum of African American storytellers whose aim is to preserve knowledge by capturing the essence of her culture-its life, spirit, and magic. She states, “I am dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of the African American artist / cultural worker by documenting her / his achievements for future generations to keep the music and visual poetry alive.” Her work has been shown in galleries, museums, and film festivals notionally and internationally and she is associated with UCLA filmmakers known as the L.A. Rebellion.

The annual Visual and Media Cultures Colloquia (VMCC) at UC Santa Cruz are a collaboration between the graduate programs in Film and Digital Media Department and Visual Studies in the History of Art and Visual Culture Department. The series brings an array of cutting-edge scholars to speak on a broad spectrum of subjects.
