Ecem Sarıçayır is a Ph.D. Candidate in the History of Architecture and Urban Development program at Cornell University. Her dissertation focuses on art, architecture, and urbanism in the South Caucasus from the late 19th to early 20th century and investigates the imperial projects by the Ottoman and Russian Empires; the nation-building projects of Turkey and the Soviet Union; and the diverse material and intellectual responses by the region’s inhabitants to the changes in the South Caucasus built environment. Her research is supported by the Andrew Mellon Foundation, the Canadian Center of Architecture, and the Social Science Research Council.
