In January 2018, Amber Hickey received second place in the Cold War Essay Contest, through the John A. Adams ’71 Center for Military History & Strategic Analysis at the Virginia Military Institute. Her essay, entitled  "Weapons of Mass Distraction: The Spectacle of Sacrifice at the Nevada Test Site," critically analyzes the act of viewing atomic tests during the Cold War, and draws upon research performed in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The essay was also solicited for submission to the Journal of Military History.
