HAVC Mentors
The HAVC mentors help orient new majors and share their valuable experiences and knowledge. They act as mentors to other HAVC students, offering guidance on course selection, faculty, possible areas of study, and ways to get involved in the major. HAVC mentors also serve as members of the Chair's Student Advisory Board and meet with the Department Chair each quarter to share information about the department from a student’s perspective.
HAVC Student Representatives
HAVC student representatives help plan HAVC quarterly events, facilitate student outreach, organize study sessions for HAVC courses, and manage our social media to keep students informed of courses being offered, museum field trips, social events focused on the arts, movie nights, and faculty talks. Our student representatives serve as an important channel of communication between the department and students in the major.
Student Projects
Students in the History of Art & Visual Culture have many opportunities to work with outstanding faculty on research projects. Research enhances student scholarship and provides participants with invaluable skills and experience. The HAVC program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to participate by applying to a faculty-initiated project, or by submitting a student-initiated project in order to receive funding.
Student Enrichment Opportunities
In addition to coursework at UCSC, study abroad, and internships, there are a multitude of ways to get involved in the department and to engage in meaningful learning opportunities. Below are just some ways that students can enrich their educational experience in HAVC.
- Meet with a HAVC mentor.
- Attend HAVC events and field trips.
- Attend the Visual Cultures and Media Colloquia (VMCC).
- Learn about HAVC internship opportuntities and consider doing an internship.
- Develop an independent study with a faculty person.
- Study abroad.
- Travel to a museum/organization/event relevant to your HAVC research interests.
- Volunteer.
- Attend a professional conference.
- Apply for a scholarship.
- Consider becoming a HAVC mentor or student representative.
